Hocus Pocus
Hocus Pocus is a highly participatory magic show which removes the traditional “fourth wall” of theatre. This style of performance injects a different kind of personality and vitality, in contrast to other forms of theatre offered.  The unique interactive nature has strongly resonated with the centers Magicana has worked with since 2004.  Hocus Pocus gives the seniors and the centers the opportunity to reunite young and old, an excuse to create  multi-generational gatherings - one that creates an environment where each generation can benefit from interacting with the other.

Strolling Sorcery
Strolling Sorcery is an intimate magical performance.  A professional magician will give several shorter, personalized shows to smaller groups one after the other.  Magic performed this close is extremely engaging and provides a truly memorable experience.  The strolling format can be combined with refreshments and snacks to make for a magical afternoon tea.

Dynamic Duo
In March 2008, we staged a new, interactive version of Hocus Pocus!  for seniors where we integrated close-up strolling magic for 45 minutes and then, following a refreshment break, we presented a parlour-styled 30-minute magic show. This is a great combination for seniors, staff and volunteers. In particular, the intimacy generated through close-up magic creates many special individualized moments, which we believe is an integral part of a performing art.

An Afternoon of Magic
We will also introduce An Afternoon of Magic. This program will build upon the successes of partnering schools and high-school volunteers with the senior community. We envision youths working with seniors to learn magic together over an afternoon. After a tea break, the event will conclude with performances by youths and/or seniors with the lead instructor closing the show with a professional set. Initial feedback has been encouraging. We will customize the program to work with each centre to ensure cross-generational opportunities (for example, youths coming to learn magic with their grandparents) and empowerment for seniors.

Currently, we are looking at how to execute the program with more family involvement and canvassing for both funding and program execution partners.

ShareMagic

Unfortunately, many seniors in the Greater Toronto Area and surrounding areas, do not have the access, nor the ability to participate with arts-related programming offered in their community. There may be financial barriers, physical challenges or family dynamics preventing seniors from attending. Imagine what a lively afternoon of unique entertainment can bring! More often than not, we hear reports of what memories came flooding back from watching one of our shows. We also hear great stories that seniors share from their youth.

ShareMagic is about sharing just that….magic. Read more about this donation program. To bring Senior Sorcery to your community, contact us.
